Golf Beginner Guide

Buying Golf Clubs

You have caught the golfing bug and you have decided to look for a set of golf clubs. So you head for your nearest pro shop or sporting goods store and you find that there are hundreds of sets from which to choose. Since you don't know whether your love of the game is the real thing or just a passing fancy, you should be cautious when you buy your first set of golf clubs. Here are a few things to think about as you make you first purchase.

Step 1

Ask your friends who are golfers to try their clubs at a driving range before you begin shopping for your own set. By doing so, you will begin to sense the kinds of clubs you should buy. You should also rely on those who really know about golf clubs by visiting with the professionals at a local golf course or pro shop.

Step 2

Purchase a half set of clubs that are made for beginner golfers. Most half sets consist of five irons--a four, six, eight, pitching wedge and sand iron as well as a three- and five-wood and a putter. Missing are the driver and two, three and four iron that are particularly hard for a beginner to hit. Not only are half sets easier to use, they make selecting a clubs much easier. Half sets of clubs will enable you to improve your swing without having to spend much more on a complete set of clubs. When you are ready to take the next step, either choose a half set to which you can add more clubs as you become more adept, or trade it in.

Step 3

Always try your new set of clubs before you buy them. If you plan to buy clubs from a large sporting good store, many have indoor driving ranges for that purpose. If you buy your clubs at a pro shop, try to hit a few shots on the driving range before you make your purchase. While you can spend less on your golf clubs by going online, in most cases you cannot return the clubs if they are not suited to you.

Step 4

Select clubs that have perimeter-weighted heads because they will be more forgiving due to having an expanded “sweet spot.” Although they are more expensive that steel shafts, graphite shafts are ideal for the beginning golfer. Because they are lighter, more of the club's weight is in the head making it easier for you to swing the club a bit faster.

Step 5

Make sure that the grips on the clubs are in good condition if you have chosen to buy used clubs. You can pay to have this easy job done for you or you can do it yourself. Just make sure that the new grips are the same size as the ones you plan to replace.
