Golf Beginner Guide

Off The Tee

Teeing ground

Players must play their first shot on every hole from the teeing ground, known as the tee. The ball must be played from anywhere between the two tee markers and up to two club lengths back from an imaginary line running between them.  A player may stand with his or her feet outside the imaginary box as long as the ball is inside the imaginary box.  The tee markers may not be moved.  In stroke play, if you are found to have played from outside the tee area you must add two shots to your score.  In match play, your opponent can order you to play the stroke again without penalty.  If you knock the ball off the tee while addressing it you may replace it and play your stroke without penalty.  This is because the ball is not considered to be 'in play' until after a player has teed off.  Honour The person who won the previous hole - or in the case of a drawn hole the last hole that was won - has the right to play first.  This is known as 'having the honour'.   In match play if a player plays out of turn, the opponent can make him replay the shot but without penalty.   Etiquette
  • Always wait for the way ahead to become clear before teeing off
  • Shout 'fore!' to alert other golfers if your ball is heading towards them
  • Stand out of the way when your opponent is teeing off
  • It is polite to be on time for a match - and in a tournament you can be disqualified for being late
  • Be quiet when your opponent is playing
  • Watch for partner's ball not just your own
  • Take your practice swings off the tee
The Tees

If you’ve ever been to a golf course,  you’ve probably noticed the several different tees littering the teeing ground. They come in a variety of colours and can be set at different distances from the green but what do they all mean? Many beginner golfers will start at the tees closest to the hole but as we progress in skill, it may be time to determine just how far back each tee is, what the colours mean and which “marker” a golfer should tee off from.

The Distance of Tee Markers

At each hole there will be a few tee boxes available for golfers to begin hole play, each box is usually marked with a uniquely colour tee marker and plague stating the exact hitting yardage from one colour of tee to the hole. Most golf courses have three tee boxes per hole with the distances varying based on the hole’s par. The most experienced and skilled golfers will tee off from the markers (tee box) furthest away from the hole while average golfers or those who are above the beginner level will hit the ball from the middle tees. The tee markers closest to the hole of course are reserved for beginning golfers. The foremost tees are designated for beginner players because they usually offer the shortest distance to the hole and the least amount of obstacles, providing a good beginner game.

What Each Colour Means

Some courses will have different colours to represent unique tee boxes but traditionally the colours of tee markers are represented as such:

  • Blue Tees: These tee markers are usually for the most skilled of male players with low handicaps. These tee boxes that are the furthest yardage from the hole unless the course has black or gold tees. Blue tees are also often referred to as the “tips.”
  • Black or Gold Tees: Black or golden colour tees are used in professional tournaments and the most skilled players in the world will usually tee off from tee boxes marked with these colours.
  • White Tees: Reserved for male players with middle to high handicaps and called the “men’s tee,” the white tees are the middle tee between blue tees and the women’s tee which is traditionally red in colour.
  • Red Tees: Known as the women’s tee, the red tees are found in front of the men’s tees and are often the shortest tees to the hole. The only tee box that is closer in yards to the hole is the green marker tees which are reserved for junior and beginning golfers.
So Where Should You Tee Off From?

The next time you are at a Mesquite golf course, you will be able to know what each colour tee and tee box means to you as a golfer. If you are a beginner, we recommend the green tees while for the more experienced players should golf from their perspective women’s and men’s tees.
